Professor Lam has spent most of her teaching career at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She has a long-standing research interest in myopia and binocular vision. She is a member and advisor of the Hong Kong Society of Professional Optometrists, a member of the College of Optometrists (UK) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometrists. She is serving as the President of the Asia Pacific Council of Optometry (APCO) and is a member of the Board of Directors of the World Council of Optometry (WCO). She is also currently an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Waterloo, Canada. She and her research team has won several awards including the OPO Bernard Gilmartin Award from the College of Optometrists in UK, the Grand Prix of the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva 2018, the SILMO d'Or Award (Vision) at SILMO optical fair in France in 2020 for the DIMS lens invention and the Gold Medal and a special grand prize at the 39th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva in 2011 for the invention of the DISC lens.
