Bio of the Speakers:

 Dr. Maria Liu is an associate professor of clinical optometry at UC Berkeley School of Optometry. She is the founder and chief of the UC Berkeley Myopia Control Clinic - the first of its kind in a teaching clinic, which now serves as a model for optometry schools across the country. Originally from Beijing, Dr. Liu practiced as an ophthalmologist in China before relocating to the United States in 2000. She obtained her MBA prior to her OD training at Pacific University, College of Optometry. Dr. Liu also completed an MPH with emphasis in biostatistics and clinical study design and a PhD in physiological optics at UC Berkeley. The main emphasis of her research and clinical expertise has been on the investigation and utilization of novel optical designs and pharmaceuticals in myopia control.

Dr. Liu enjoys teaching both in didactic and clinical settings. She has years of experience in teaching basic and clinical pharmacology, ocular disease, epidemiology, as well as comparative studies on the similarity and difference of primary vision care in developed vs. developing countries. Last but not the least, Dr. Liu is very enthusiastic about humanitarian services and helped organize as well as served as the attending doctor for multiple VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) trips to China.

 Dr. Damien Paillé is a member of Essilor International’s optical research and development team, based in Singapore. Damien holds a degree in optometry and practiced as an optician before completing and defending a doctoral thesis in 2005 in cognitive sciences at the University of Paris VIII in collaboration with the College de France and the Renault company. He then pursued post-doctoral studies at the Laboratory for Perception and Motion Control in Virtual Environments (a joint Renault-CNRS laboratory), before joining Essilor International’s research and development team in 2007. After ten years in the Vision Sciences department in France, Damien joined the Vision Sciences team in Singapore as a Senior Vision Scientist and as Associate Director of the Wenzhou Medical University Essilor International Research Center (WEIRC) based in Wenzhou, China. He recently joined the Myopia Category team in Essilor as Category Innovation Manager in charge of consumer.

Assoc. Prof. Jinhua BAO or Dr. Jinhua BAO, Director, laboratory of Myopia & Visual Function at the Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University

 BAO Jinhua is responsible for the Laboratory of Myopia & Visual Function at the Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University, China. She is also currently an associate director of WEIRC (Wenzhou Medical University-Essilor International Research Center). Her research interest is on myopia and visual function, visual quality. In recent years, she has directed several scientific research projects and won several awards, such as Chinese Medical Science and Technology Prize, Zhejiang Science and Technology Prize.
