Abstract
Emerging evidence highlights a compelling association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and normal tension glaucoma (NTG), two conditions traditionally managed in distinct medical specialities.
This interdisciplinary seminar, co-delivered by Dr Wu (Ophthalmologist) and Dr Lam (Otorhinolaryngologist), aims to unravel the complex interplay between nocturnal breathing disturbances and optic nerve health. The mechanisms will be reviewed by which intermittent hypoxia, vascular dysregulation, and oxidative stress in OSA may contribute to glaucomatous optic neuropathy, even in the absence of elevated intraocular pressure. The seminar will also explore current screening strategies, collaborative management approaches, and the potential impact of OSA treatment on glaucoma progression. By fostering this interdisciplinary dialogue, the seminar seeks to enhance early detection, optimize patient outcomes, and encourage integrated care pathways for individuals at risk.
